Racoon Tails

Yesterday Dooce, one of the blogs that I read religiously, had a great story about a racoon living in her chimney. It reminded me of a recent racoon event of my own.

I was couch surfing at a friend's house in San Diego, and in the middle of the night I heard the cat growling at the back door. I didn't think too much about it because after all the back door was closed. I rolled over and went to sleep, sort of. A bit later I heard the cat eating out of it's bowl. Dry cat food is really loud. I snuggled deeper under the covers planning to try and sleep again when I heard the cat growling at the back door.

My eyes popped wide open! If the cat is at the back door... what the %$* is eating the cat's food? Damn it! The light switch is next to the cat's bowl. Whatever is eating the cat's food I don't want to get tangled up with it. Where's my flashlight? In my computer bag.

Very quietly I retrieved my flashlight. The crunching stopped. I turned on the light pointed towards the cat food and a BIG! flash of fur dashed across the room right towards kitty. The cat's growl turned into a screech as one big ass racoon slipped out through the doggy door. Looking out into the yard I could see two racoons running through the moonlight down into the canyon.

Ok, now I'm really gonna have a hard time going back to sleep. I made sure that the doggy door was properly closed, grabbed a midnight snack, surfed the web for a bit and then went back to sleep without further incident.

The next morning when I told my friend about it, he was all excited. "Did racoons come inside the house? Cool. I guess I forgot to shut the doggy door." duh!
