Old Broken Bones and Bikram Yoga

This week began my second month of practicing Bikram yoga in Ashland, Oregon. So far I’m pleased with my results. It is obvious to me that I’ve let myself get into the worst physical shape of my life. Some days I believe it is a miracle that I can even walk. But the results are irrefutable. I’m down to the last notch on my long belt. Perhaps another week or two and I’ll have to switch over to my shorter belt.

Last week I had four consecutive days and this week I’ve had four consecutive days. After this weekend I’m going to see what five days straight feels like.

A couple of weeks ago I woke up with a very sore left leg. The night before I had gone swimming and thought that I had tweaked my thigh muscles while doing a racing dive. Later, after observing the pain in my leg I determined that it might not have been the racing dive which was causing this pain. This pain felt very deep and vaguely familiar. The big quads in my thigh felt exactly the same as when I had broken my leg 12 years ago at Mammoth Mountain.

Although the muscles are very sore causing me to favor that leg, my feeling is that this is a good thing. This means that I’m going deep enough into my practice to wake up this old injury which will ultimately allow my body to release it and grow stronger.
