Is he a scientist? or a stamp collector?

UK phycisist Brian Cox talks about the Large Hadron Collider on Ted. When I started watching this video my first thought was that this guy was somebody that Central Casting sent over to TED to read a script. It is unlikely that TED works this way so Brian Cox is obviously a very serious scientist. What do you suppose that given the right exposure this guy could inspire millions of teenage girls to want to study physics? So is he a scientist? or a stamp collector? Enjoy the video.

  1. Phil,

I absolutely love this sort of stuff. Thanks for the post.

I’m a computer scientist by trade. Generally I deal with problems that are well defined, proven solvable, and with a guaranteed payoff at the end. Very lucrative, but not often cutting edge.

True science like this stands my hair on end. What a joy to be able to persue knowledge for its own sake as a living.

    All the best,
    Mark

  2. Mark,
Know what you mean. Sometimes working on the bleeding edge takes time to pay off. Amazingly illustrated by Brian Cox in his statement about what you get from Hydrogen and Oxygen when you give it 13.5 Billion years.
