I absolutely love this sort of stuff.  Thanks for the post.

I'm a computer scientist by trade.  Generally I deal with problems that are well defined, proven solvable, and with a guaranteed payoff at the end.  Very lucrative, but not often cutting edge.

True science like this stands my hair on end. What a joy to be able to persue knowledge for its own sake as a living.
