Joe the Plumber

Joe Wurzelbacher questions Barack Obama

Joe Wurzelbacher questions Barack Obama

Earlier this week Barack Obama was approached by a man in Ohio. That man was Joe Wurzelbacher, and he asked Obama Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn’t it?. It was a direct question. Obama gave a revealing answer. It’s not that I want to punish your success, I want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they’ve got a chance for success, too.

Obama further explained, My attitude is that if the economy’s good for folks from the bottom up, it’s gonna be good for everybody. I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.

Many people are making much of Joe the Plumber this week. John McCain referenced Joe almost two dozen times during the debate the other night. Joe Biden says that Joe the Plumber doesn’t exist in his hometown. The media is questioning Joe’s integrity. They say that Carl Rove planted him in the crowd. They’re pointing out that he is not a licensed plumber, that he owes back taxes, and he doesn’t make $250K a year, and that somehow John McCain has made a mistake in using Joe to illustrate the dangers of Obama’s tax plan.

What is this, the Stepford Plumbers Association? Anyone that represents America has to be perfect? I’ve got some news for the mainstream media. We’re all flawed. We’re all struggling to achieve the American Dream. Joe the plumber seems like an ordinary citizen in this country. Like many Americans Joe would like the government get out of his way so that he can get busy with his life and his business.

Obama says he’s worried about the little people behind Joe. He says that he wants to give them a chance at success too. Senator Obama I’ve got news for you. We already have that chance. No other place or time in history has had so many people who have achieved success the way Americans have. America is a place where hard work, innovation, persistence, and determination pay off. The biggest impediment to ordinary Americans is the American government. While Joe the plumber struggles to earn enough money to buy the business he works for you keep trying to take it away from him to give it to someone else. Someone else whom you believe needs a chance for success.

I’m with Joe on this Senator Obama. I’m with Senator McCain and Governor Palin. This country needs to get out of the way of its citizens and businesses!

Wait a sec. Mr. Obama wants to cut Joe’s taxes MORE than Mr. McCain wants to, thus putting more money into Joe’s pockets so he can more easily fulfill the American Dream. And you’ve got a problem with that?
What about Joe’s boss? Well, the taxable income of this business is something like $100K/year. Again, Obama’s plan cuts his taxes MORE than McCain does. Socialism!
Suppose the business earns $280K/year after expenses. That puts the owner in the top 1% of the earners in the USA. Let’s say he’s married and filing jointly. Under Obama, his itemized deductions would actually increase slightly — he’d get $49,420 in itemized deductions, while under McCain he’d get $48,975. But his personal exemptions would increase slightly under McCain — he’d give him $6,911, whereas he’d only get $6,132 from Obama.

That leaves his taxable income at $213,766 under Obama, $213,433 under McCain. Now we have to factor in the bracket cutoff, which for 2009 is $208,850. Anything below that figure for married couples filing jointly is taxed at the fourth tier, 28 percent. Any income above it, until you get up to near $400,000, is taxed at the fifth tier. And this is where Obama’s evil socialistic plan comes in.

As you can see, his taxable income is about $5,000 higher than the cutoff. McCain is going to tax that $5,000 at the current rate, which is 33 percent. But Obama’s crazed plan calls for raising that rate to — get ready for it — 35 percent.

And here’s what this means. Under McCain, his total tax bill would be $48,254. Under Obama, it would be $48,511.

That’s a difference of $257. OH MAH GAWD! This plumber has to work an entire TWO hours more per year to pay for this! He won’t be able to do it. He’ll HAVE to sell the business to Joe!

Moreover, the secret of Obama’s plan is, his top tax rate is LOWER than that under Eisenhower, Nixon, and Reagan!

    The commie.

Oh yeah, and you’re with Palin, who told a third grader that the VP’s job is to RUN the Senate? Right on – so CORRECT in her perception of her job! Read the Constitution, Sarah!

    Health Care -$43B to -$223B -$52B to -$106B
    Other +$227B to +$304B +$144B
    TOTAL -$229B to -$400B -$262B to -$316B

Not much of a financial difference. They’re both promising more than they plan to pay for.

You might argue that Obama + Dem congress would spend more than McCain + Dem congress, but history is against you — you have to go all the way back to 1964 to find a Dem president + Dem congress spending more than Republicans. Ever since Nixon, Republicans have spent more than Democrats, borrowing the money rather than paying as you go with taxes. The worst was the recent Bush+Republican Congress, who broke all records for spending.
