As a tech head I really love new gadgets, especially when they’re useful, and have the potential to be a total game changer. So what the heck is an “SSD” anyway? Ok SSD stands for “Solid State Drive.” These little beauties are high capacity storage devices that have no moving parts. This makes them extremely fast, super reliable, very energy efficient. At least that’s the idea I get from looking into SSD’s.
Be careful cuz. SSDs created using flash have a limited number of writes, then they start failing. The limit is something like 100,000 writes, and modern operating systems, particularly those by Microsoft, write an awful lot. Figure 2-3 year life on these. Moreover, their cost per GB is quite poor in comparison to hard disk drives.
RAM based SSDs can be written to an unlimited amount of time, but you need battery backup to keep the power on to keep your data. They, too, are quite expensive per GB.
You make an excellent point Matt. Even with the limitations SSD technology is amazing. Early adopters should be prepared pay a premium for the bleeding edge technology, and to safeguard their data from disk failure.
